Gait Cycle Phase Analysis
The freeStep software automatically identifies and segments each complete gait cycle into its constituent phases initial contact heel strike loading response mid stance terminal stance pre swing and swing phase. The timing and duration of each phase is quantified for both the right and left lower limbs revealing phase specific asymmetries that indicate pathological gait patterns compensatory movement strategies or the biomechanical consequences of injury or pain.
Spatiotemporal Parameters
Cadence (steps per minute) step length stride length step width step time stride time double support time single support time and swing time are all calculated from the sensor data for each limb independently providing the complete quantified picture of walking symmetry and efficiency.
Asymmetry Identification
Symmetry indices calculated from left right comparisons of each spatiotemporal parameter provide objective numerical measures of gait asymmetry the most important outcome measure in post surgical and neurological gait rehabilitation.
Gait Line Visualisation
The progression of the Centre of Pressure CoP across the plantar surface during each stance phase is rendered as a visual gait line showing the path of load transfer from heel through midfoot to forefoot and toe off. Three Visualisation Modes
- Average Pressure Map-Shows the mean pressure at each sensor location across all captured footsteps in the session revealing the characteristic loading pattern of that patients foot and identifying consistently high or low pressure regions.
- Maximum Pressure Map-Shows the peak pressure recorded at each sensor location across all footsteps identifying the absolute maximum load at each plantar region and highlighting areas at greatest risk of tissue injury plantar fascia overload or metatarsal stress fracture.
- Pressure Time Integral Map-Shows the cumulative pressure exposure at each sensor location across the stance phase a measure of total load dose rather than just peak intensity High pressure time integral values indicate regions experiencing prolonged pressure exposure important for tissue health assessment in diabetic foot and plantar lesion prevention.
CoP Progression
The path of the Centre of Pressure from initial contact through toe off is overlaid on the pressure map providing a dynamic visualisation of the foots load transfer mechanism during each stance phase.
Regional Load Percentage
The foot is automatically divided into anatomical regions heel midfoot forefoot toes and the percentage of total load borne by each region is calculated and displayed quantifying forefoot rearfoot loading ratios and medial lateral load distribution that are critical for orthosis prescription and footwear advice.
